2002-13 TRANSPORTATION AND URBAN SPRAWL
The role of highway construction in promoting urban sprawl is well known, and the Izaak Walton League has existing policy urging all levels of government to consider their decision making processes and programs that may contribute to sprawl.
The current increased emphasis on other modes of transportation - various bus and rail systems, as means to prevent additional highway construction, does not in itself address the issue of expansion of urban areas and increased urban sprawl.
The problem of urban sprawl and loss of productive agricultural land requires consideration of all modes of transportation including both highways and mass transit in reaching the most environmentally sound and publicly responsible solutions.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Minnesota Division of the Izaak Walton League of America in convention April 28, 2002, at Detroit Lakes, MN urges all levels of government to review their decision making process with respect to all transportation programs that may contribute to sprawl, to ensure that the greatest public interest is served.
